Rochester's recorded settlement began in the mid-1850s when George Head and his family claimed land along the Zumbro River area on July 12, 1854. The city was officially incorporated on August 5, 1858. Early Rochester grew as a stagecoach stop on the Dubuque Trail between Dubuque, Iowa and Saint Paul.
Two events transformed Rochester from frontier outpost to nationally significant city. The arrival of the railroad in 1864 connected Rochester to regional and national markets. Simultaneously, Dr. William Worrall Mayo opened his medical practice in Rochester in 1864 — the foundation of what would become the Mayo Clinic. After an 1883 tornado devastated the city, the Mayo family worked with the Sisters of Saint Francis to establish Saint Marys Hospital in 1889, cementing Rochester's identity as a medical destination.
Throughout the 20th century, Rochester evolved into a multi-pillar economy combining healthcare, technology (with IBM establishing its Rochester campus in 1956), agriculture, and tourism. The 2013 Destination Medical Center legislation has committed billions in continued investment.
